Serve the Least

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matt. 25:40)

In Beijing, there was a government operated poorhouse that accommodated elderly person who had no money, no abilities to take care of themselves, and no help from their legal relatives. The house would cover all expenses, and provided all necessities. There were seldom having visitors. Many of them were ignored by their relatives. They had problem to speak, to move around and mostly confined to wheelchairs. They were there to wait for their term of departure.

There was a group of Christians who were determined to step out of the ivory tower of church to practice their faith with actions by coming to this home to help the elderly. They knelt down and washed feet of old people who couldn’t bend over, and then cut their toenails; some nails had grown into the flesh and the skin was bleeding. They washed hairs for the elderly with amnesia and set their dresses right. They even helped the house staffs to clean up filthy bodies of elderly to put clean clothes on. Some care workers who were paid by the government, when they had to do these things, they vented their anger on the elderly. These elderly have accustomed to take the abuses silently. But these Christians took care of them with love, grace and give them proper respect. For example, when a care worker approached the room and stepped on the stool, he began to shut to the residences in the room and ordered all of them stood up and took off their trousers for checking. But a brother quietly followed behind to help clean up the excrements.

It all started with a sister’s invitation in the house to have a Bible study. Later, when the volunteers of the church went to serve the elderly, they were confronted with many suspicions and refusals. The house even called the police to check on them. After all, these Christians were truly serving with love and gained their trust and were able to allow helping. Gradually people believed in the Lord and began the Sunday worship. There were various programs, singing, performances, Scripture readings, preaching, and slowly becoming the moment that many old people waited for in a week. In the past few years, a dozen old people believed in the Lord and received baptism. Some of them died without even a family, but there were church brethren and sisters to accompany them and they were comforted. I believe these silent servants will have great rewards in heaven.
