3. Great Commission Committee (GCCMeeting: Tonight 6:30 PM at Compton Church. Welcome brothers and sisters who are interested in mission to attend. Please also pray for this meeting.

5. Campus Ministry: First co-worker meeting for Spring Gospel Camp will begin at 1:30 PM this afternoon in Fellowship Hall.

7. 80 Days Near to the Lord: It has started. All fellowship groups or small groups please stop using your studying materials and join in Purpose Driven Life devotional program from 1/10-2/18. Every Wednesday, your group leader will send you the study guide.

8. Evangelical Explosion (EE) Training: It began yesterday (1/20 ) Sat. at 6:30 PM at UC area and it will last for 13 weeks to equip people in sharing the gospel.

9. Youth Counselor Appreciation Night: 1/27 Sat. 5:30 PM at Mason Church. Please pray for this event.

10. No Love Feast On 1/28: Due to the kitchen remodeling was not completed yet, the love feast for this month is cancelled. Please pray that this project will be completed soon.

11. Ministry Coordinating Meeting1/28 12:30 PM at gym upper room. All the ministry leaders are required to attend. Lunch will be provided with freewill offering.

犬儒主義

 「所以我們不可再彼此論斷.寧可定意誰也不給弟兄放下絆腳跌人之物。」(羅14:13

  安提斯泰尼是蘇格拉底的弟子。由於他老師的過逝,他鄙棄了他從前所重視的,除了純樸的善良之外,他不願意要任何東西。他結交工人並且穿得和他們一樣他在露天講演,用的話沒有受過教育的人也都理解。一切精緻的哲學,他都認為毫無價值;他強調返樸歸真;主張不要政府,不要私有財產,不要婚姻,不要宗教。他摒棄奢侈和對感官快樂的追求。他的一個跟隨者狄奧根尼,更是主張清心寡欲,鄙視世俗的榮華富貴,力倡回歸自然。據說狄奧根尼本人住在一個甕桶裡,以討飯為生。有人譏笑他活得像條狗,他卻不惱。「犬儒」之稱由此得名。一天,亞歷山大皇帝御駕親臨,前來探望正躺在地上曬太陽的狄奧根尼,問他希望得到什麼,狄奧根尼回答說:「我希望你閃到旁邊,讓我可以曬到太陽。」狄奧根尼是一個激烈的社會批評家,他立志要揭穿世間的偽善,追求從物慾之下解放出來的心靈自由。

  犬儒主義經過歷代的演變,逐漸成為一個憤世嫉俗,批評時尚的代名詞;以不信任和反對來取得影響力;懷疑正統成為一種常態思想;是一種不反抗的清醒和不認同的接受,結果變成說一套做一套,只顧批評而又屈服於潮流中的生活方式。最明顯的例子就是後共產主義的社會,許多知識份子的心態。批評一切,反對所有,但又屈服於現實,無力改變。這種不信任一切的思想逐漸入侵到基督教信仰的範圍中,成了一種批評教會和教會領導的風潮。我們只要上網,就可以看到,若有人稍微出名,馬上會受到犬儒主義者的攻擊,說他愛慕虛榮,追求世俗,走成功神學的路,不追求基督的十字架。當然,提醒人不要走入歧途是對的,但批評的人也要反省,自己做的怎樣?不能為批評而批評,那是論斷弟兄。

Cynicism

  "Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.” (Rom.14:13)

   Antisthenes was a pupil of Socrates. Because of his teacher's forced to die, he disdained what he had previously valued, and he did not want to acquire for anything but simple virtues. He dressed like common people and lived among them. He spoke in the open market and used words that even uneducated people could understand. All fine philosophy, he considered them worthless; he emphasized to return to basics; advocated no government, no private property, no marriage and no religion. He abandoned the luxury and the pursuit of sensual pleasure. One of his followers, Diogenes, advocated a carefree living and despised secular prosperity and wealth, and advocated to return to the nature. It was said that Diogenes himself lived as a beggar and lived in a barrel. Someone ridiculed him for living like a dog, but he did not mind. Hence the cynicism was used because the word “cynic” was derived from the Greek word meaning "dog". One day, Emperor Alexander came to visit Diogenes, who was lying on the ground and enjoying basking in the sun, and Empire asked him what he hoped to gain. Diogenes replied: "I hope you can move aside so that I can bask in the sun.” Diogenes was a fierce social critic. He resolved to unmask hypocrisy in the world and to pursue the spiritual freedom freed from materialism.

   Over the time, cynicism has gradually become a synonym for cynical criticism. It gained its influence by distrust and opposition. To doubt orthodoxy became normal way of thinking; it is realization without taking action and accepts with strong disagreement. It results in saying one way and doing the other, criticizing the trend of the way of life but yielding to it. The most obvious examples are the post-communist society, the mentality of many intellectuals was to criticize all, oppose all, but they yielded to the reality and had no power to change. This idea of distrust gradually invaded the Christian faith and became a wave of cynicism toward the church and church leaders. We could see it clearly on the web; for example, if someone became famous, he would immediately be attacked by cynics that he admired vanity, pursued worldliness, and took the path of Success Theology instead of pursuing the cross of Christ. Of course, it is good to remind people not to go astray from the truth, but critics also need to reflect on how they are doing in their own life. We cannot criticize others just for the sake of criticism, because that is judging others and is against the biblical principle.
