Caring for Your Parents

"If anyone does not provide for his relatives, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." (1 Tim. 5:8)

One night, in a nice restaurant, there was a young man dining with an old man. When the food was placed, the young man got up to tie a cloth napkin for the elderly, laid another napkin on his lap, and let the old man begin to eat. The old man's weak trembling hand, and his un-coordinate mouth, caused the food to fall on the table and on the ground. The nearby diners felt disgusted and looked at them with embarrassment. But the young man was very patiently to wipe out pieces of food from old man’s face, and cut his food into small pieces. The young man, who was apparently a son, did not pay any attentions to surrounding dinners. He did not feel ashamed to take care of his messy father, and his father was obviously enjoying it very much. Finally, when they finished eating, the son got up and took his father into the restroom. He washed his hands, wiped his face, cleaned the shirt and combed his hair and adjusted his pants; then he held him back to the dining room. Other diners saw that and began to look at them with admiration. The son quickly paid the bill and held his father out of the restaurant. As they were passing by a table, a middle-aged man said to the young man, "Young man, don’t you think you have left something behind?" The son answered with a little surprised: "No!" The middle-age man said, “You did! You left behind an example for all the sons and also left behind the hope for all the fathers.”

The Bible wants us to take care of our loved ones, for this is the part of our duty as believers. In today's society, most parents are dedicated to their children, but few children patiently take care of their parents. Most of adult children are busy with their own family and their own business, and pay no attention to their parent’s needs. They wait until they have time, unfortunately by then, their parents either are too old to enjoy any activity or sick in bed. For first-generation immigrants, because of language and culture and health insurance problems, it is hard to make decision for their elderly parents whether to stay in their own country or to emigrated overseas. Besides, due to improving modern medical science, people live much longer, and aging children themselves may not have strength to take care of their parents. Therefore, let us honor our parents when they are still healthy and active and spend time with them, so that we won’t feel regret in the future.
