† ďFor the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.Ē (Pro. 2:6)

†† What is wisdom? According to the Webster Dictionary, wisdom is: 1. Accumulated philosophical or scientific learning knowledge; 2. Ability to discern inner qualities and relationships insight; 3. Good sense judgment; 4. A wise attitude, belief, or course of action; 5. The teachings of the ancient wise men; 6. Generally accepted belief. Psychologists have gathered data on commonly held beliefs about wisdom. Its analyses indicate that wisdom is expertise and tolerance in dealing with difficult questions of life including intrapersonal, inter-personal relationship. They believe through social activities, emotional experience, and cognitive learning process, one can convert the knowledge into wisdom. Intelligence is prerequisite to obtain wisdom. Philosophers tend to treat wisdom as a virtue. Socrates defined philosophy as literally the love of wisdom. Aristotle defined wisdom as the understanding of causes and knowing why things are in a certain way. Confucius believed wisdom is practicing the Doctrine of the Mean in addition to following the rules of nature. Actually, all religions are seeking wisdom but in different directions. In Buddhism, wisdom is the ability to distinguish good and evil and self-restrain to overcome the desires of indulgence. In Hinduism, wisdom is to reach a state of mind or soul where a person achieves liberation. In Islam, wisdom is deemed to follow Allahís revealed teaching and justice so that men can enjoy many gifts from him. In Judaism, wisdom, justice and kindness are regarded as highest virtues and wisdom is the ability to foresee the future.

†† In Christianity, wisdom does not solely mean to make the right decision, but it also contains three more elements. First, wisdom is to keep a good relationship with heavenly Father. (Prov. 9:10) Second, the wisdom of salvation is to trust and obey Godís will which are generally opposite to the worldly wisdom. (2 Corin.2:6; 2 Tim. 3:15) Third, wisdom is Jesus Christ. (1 Corin. 1:30) In human nature, we can learn the wisdom of the world. But our human nature is corrupted and has no way to be able to reach Godís standards, not to mention to have true wisdom. Therefore, only when Christ is in us through indwelling of the Holy Spirit, then we are able to submit to Godís leadership and practice His truth. This is true wisdom!
