Eyes of Heart

“I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened.” (Eph.1: 18)

A news reporter was proud of his honesty for reporting only true stories.  When Mr. Moody was preaching in the evangelistic meeting he criticized him saying: “The difference between I and Mr. Moody is I tell the true stories but he tells made-up stories.”  In order to prove his point, he attended Mr. Mood’s meeting one night.  That night Mr. Moody told a story.  He said: “One day before Christmas, three girls were walking on a street to do some window shopping.  Two of them were very interested by the display, but the third didn’t show much interested.  A woman, out of curiosity, approached to further observe them.  Then she noticed the third girl was blind, therefore she didn’t show much interest.  This is the difference between a Christian and a non-believer.  Christian likes to talk spiritual matters but non-believer do not.  Because the eyes of his heart is blind.”  After the meeting, the reporter approached Mr. Moody and asked him: “Where did you get the story of three girls?”  Mr. Moody replied: “I got it from a newspaper, but I did not remember which newspaper it was.”  The reporter said: “I wrote the story a while ago.  At that time, I did not know what its significance was.  Now, I realized that my spiritual eyes were truly blind.  Just like the third girl, I cannot experience the spiritual matters.”  That night the reporter repented and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.  He was touched by his own true story.

Our vision is very limited.  We can’t see light with longer or shorter wavelength, such as infrared ray or ultraviolet ray.  But we consider our vision is always best.  We cannot use our rationality to understand God.  If we only depend on our rationale and ignore the spiritual matter, we will miss all God’s grace in life.  When our bodies pass away, we still need to use our spiritual sense to face God.  Therefore, it is reasonable to use our spiritual eyes now, so we can see God’s wonderful deeds; to use our spiritual ears, so we can listen to His voice; to use our spiritual sense of taste, so we can enjoy the taste of His Words.
