“I will make peace your governor and righteousness
your ruler.” (Isa. 60:17)
Recently, there are many cases where
police used excessive force to kill unarmed black men and caused many people
to go to the streets in some cities to protest or even riot. According to the
British Guardian newspaper, in 2015, there were 1,140 people who were killed
by police in the U.S., and 21% of them were unarmed; 39% of the total people
killed were black. Within the limit which was set by the Supreme Court in a
1985 verdict, police can only use arms in the line of duty when their life is
threatened. Then, what is the reason for so many cases of using unnecessary
armed force against unarmed citizens?
1. The atmosphere of violence - Society as a whole, from childhood playing
video games and Hollywood movies, is full of physical and verbal violence. In
some video game, people randomly shoot others as they please and the one who
survives in the shooting becomes a “hero” and life is regarded as worthless.
Until one day, the shooting is in real life, and then it’s too late.
2. Racial discrimination - After a half century worth of effort, the number
of discrimination against black people has been reduced. But undeniably, if a
possible criminal incident involved black people, white policemen may judge
with tinted view, particularly under urgent condition, and the subconscious
fear may arise and bring about bad judgment.
3. The abuse of firearms - The United States has the most guns owned by
citizens in the world: more than three hundred million guns. Of course,
National Firearms Association pointed to the example of Great Britain where
there is much stricter control of firearms, and the homicide rate in Great
Britain is ¼ of that in US. However, it’s a fact that policemen in
U.S. are afraid that everyone carried a gun.
4. The lack of training – There is a general decline in the quality of the
police because fewer and fewer college-educated people are willing to become
police. Police training always teach policemen to protect themselves first,
and view suspects as enemies, and put people to death at one shot. Some
police also lack of physical fitness to overcome criminals.
5. Trustless relationship - This is the key to all the social chaos; a lack
of trust between people: even married couples have difficulty trusting each
other, not to mention trusting strangers. The most fundamental problem is the
Liberal Progressive mind. People with this mindset try to take God out of
society, put the Bible into the museum and try to demonize the Christian as
ignorant and hypocritical, so that their idea can dominate entire society.
Believing in God and the fear of God are the basis of a society’s well-being.
If the United States continues to discard Christianity, then it will fall
into even a more terrible chaos.
