Return to God
“Turn! Turn from your evil ways.” (Ezek. 33:11)
Recently, the most decorated splendid American
swimming athlete Michael Phelps received five gold medals and one silver
medal from the 2016 Summer Olympic in Rio de Janeiro. His Olympic record of
28 medals in five games will be very hard for anyone to break in the future.
Michael Phelps had a rather twist and painful growth experience. He was born
in Baltimore, Maryland in 1985. His father was a state trooper and a football
player. His mother is a middle school principal. When he was seven-year-old,
under the influence of his two sisters, he began to swim. At age nine, his
parents were divorced. In his sixth grade, he was diagnosed with attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder. By the age of 10, he held a national record
of his age group in the 100-meter butterfly. He was under coach Bob Bowman
since. When he was 15, he became the youngest U.S. Olympic swim team member
in 68 years. Even though he did not win anything in 2000 Summer Olympic. But
after that he began his splendid swimming career. In 2004 at Athens, he won
six gold and two bronze medals. In 2008 at Beijing, he won eight gold medals
in all events he participated. In 2012 at London, he won four gold and two
silver medals. Then he announced his retirement. But under the continuous
loss of U. S. team he decided to return to the competition. In 2015, because
of D.U.I. he was suspended for competition for six month.
Michael Phelps is a good-heart person. His foundation promote helping young and disadvantage people to
sports and promote healthier lifestyles. His fame also brought him troubles.
He had two times of D.U.I. offenses, one drug usage that caused him the
suspension of half year of any competition. In 2014, after that suspension,
he went into deep depression. His friend, ex-NFL player Ray Lewis, advised
him to enroll into a rehab center to receive 2 months of rehabilitation.
During that time, he read the book Lewis gave to him, the Purpose Driven
Life by Rich Warren. Through it, he found God and the meaning of his
life. It also gave him the courage to forgive his father. After the rehab, he
asked the formal Miss California USA Nichol Johnson to marry him and he also
reconciled with his father.
Our whole life is under God’s control. The question is whether we know Him or
not. The true success is to live out the purpose of our existences. But
without a close relationship with Him, how can we find out the meaning of our
