The Joy of Simple Living
ďLet the afflicted hear and rejoice.Ē (Psalms 34:2)††
Why simple living can bring us joy? Here are several reasons:
simple life can free us from entanglement
of material and from
worrying about many things. In fact, more things cause more harm. Itís time-consuming
to find things, and those things occupy space. Actually, we can substitute
many things we donít have with things we have. And we donít need to keep
things that we donít use often. Without them, life still goes on.
2. A simple life will help us to focus on more meaningful things. Focus on
earning more money and buying more things, may causes us to ignore our
relationship with our spouses and our loved one. Back to the simple living,
most of all, it allows us to pursue more about our relationship with God, which is the
most important matter.
3. A simple life gives us freedom. Many sources of life stress come from
being in debt. Home loans, car loans, student loans and credit card loans
give us headache. Modern people are gullible and think that itís ok to borrow
money to buy things. However, If we make all effort to pay off the loan and
be debt free, how much freedom we can have!
4. A simple life can improve physical health. Most of gourmet meals are
unhealthy food. People who love to eat them, sooner or later, they will get related
diseases: hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. Eating light meals,
exercising regularly and having a daily routine, you can have satisfied
healthy life after retirement.
5. A simple life enables us to have a grateful heart. Owning many things
causes us not to cherish the things we own. With the mentality of ďWe can buy
whatever we like.Ē we waste resources and produce garbage. If we use everything
with a grateful heart toward God, we will cherish what we have and share with
others who need them.
Prosperity Theology considers that the material rich is the sign of God's
blessings. It encourages people to exchange our faith with the grace of God.
This is a big fallacy. Christians should follow the example of Jesus Christ. When
He was on the earth, He did not have even a pillow under His head. But He
lacked nothing and was full of thanksgiving. With Lordís help, we can also
live a joyful simple life. ††
