Mother’s Day

“…There your mother conceived you, there she who was in labor gave you birth.” (Song of Songs 8:5b)

A five-year-old girl gazed at her mother’s gradually expanding belly and said: “Mommy, did I grow as a baby in your tummy just like my brother?” The mother stunned for a moment and tried to search for the best answer. With some worry she replied: “Actually you are not. Because you are special.” The daughter burst into tears and looked at her mom saying: “Mommy, why couldn’t I grow in your tummy?” The mother choked back her own tears, “At that time, the doctor said I couldn’t grow a baby in my tummy. So your daddy and I decided to adopt a baby. God gave you as a special baby to us. You are the best gift that God could ever have given us!” The mother held her breath nervously and waited for a more difficult question to come. Then the daughter with a big smile on her face said: “Mommy, can I have some ice cream?”

Life is not made by us but by God. The reason God gives us children is because He trusts us to take good care of them. Therefore, we should rear children, not from our own desires but according to His will and help them to learn to fear God and love others. It is our duty to make them good citizens of the Heavenly Kingdom. Every mother should put her priority in training her children especially when they are young. Don’t spend too much time to pursue your own careers at the expense of your children and ignore first responsibility that God bestows on you as a mother.

Anna Jarvis was a daughter of a Methodist pastor. She married the son of Baptist minister. Like many families in the nineteenth century, she gave birth to thirteen children but only four survived to adulthood. Because of it, she dedicated her life to organizing efforts to teach women how to deal with measles, typhoid fever, and diphtheria epidemics. In 1858, while pregnant with her sixth child, she began Mother’s Day Work Clubs to collect money in order to help the poor by fighting disease and providing food and support. During the Civil War, she took no position and helped wounded soldiers whether they were from the North or the South.

On May 8, 1905, Anna Jarvis passed away peacefully with her four children around her. In order to remember her, her daughter promoted the celebration for all mothers in remembering of their sacrifices and love on her mother’s anniversary. This celebration was known as Mother’s Day. It eventually was approved by President Wilson and became a national holiday.
