  Evangelicals

“The Spirit clearly says that in late times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.” (1 Tim. 4:1)

Often we say that we are Evangelicals. What does it means, Evangelicals? According to the National Association of Evangelicals, an evangelical Christian is someone who 1) believes that the Bible is authoritative; 2) who has had a born-again experience and 3) who shares this message of faith.

The Evangelical movement started in the 18th and 19th centuries with the Great Awakenings in the United Kingdom and North America. God raised many Christian leaders such as John Wesley, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, etc... They lit the torch of Gospel, and saving souls became the major purpose of life to believers. In the beginning of the twenty century, the rise of the charismatic movement and the offense-defense fight between fundamentalists and liberals made Evangelicals even more fervent in spreading the Gospel and in holding on to the truth of the Bible. Then another wave of great leaders rose up, such as Billy Graham, John Stott and Martyn Lloyd-Jones. They nurtured many godly Christians who loved God and men, and became the mainstream of the society. But since the end of twenty century, liberalism and progressivism invaded the education, the judiciary, and the media. Many Christians were assimilated by this secularism without noticing. They even thought they were Evangelicals and were helping to build bridges between faith and culture.

According to the Gallup polls in 2008, 39% of Americans claim they are Evangelicals. From 2007 to 2014, the Christian population dropped 8%. Another survey done by the Pew Research in 2008 found that 52% of American Christians think that at least some non-Christian faiths can lead to eternal life. This is the result of a policy of diversity and tolerance and it has fooled many Christians so that they can no longer distinguish the truth of faith and no longer seek to live a life that reflects the dwelling of Holy Spirit. They just become a church goer on Sunday. This also explains why so many so called Evangelicals are willing to support a possible president candidate who has no principles and has mouth full of madness.

The Bible tells us that at the end times, many rebellions will occur among believers (2 Thess.2:3). What a pity it is that for the temporary benefits of this world, one gives up his opportunity to receive the eternal life.
