Workmanship

"Jesus said: My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work.Ē (John 4:34)

A female student of the Japan Sophia University, who studied in the foreign language department, once had co-op in the famous Empire Hotel in Tokyo and was sent to clean the toilet. When she saw an old custodian who took a cup of water from the toilet bowl he just cleaned to drink, she almost wanted to vomit. But the old man was very proud of his work and told her that every toilet he washed was clean enough to drink water from it. This act gave the girl a great impact and inspiration. She realized that no matter what kind of work, one should do it with ones best and treat it as doing the most honorable job, and then one can enjoy the work truly. After that, her working attitude changed completely. Every time after she finished cleaning a toilet, she asked herself: ďCan I drink the water from it?Ē At the end of the co-op, when everyone gathered together, the girl went ahead to take a cup of water from the toilet she cleaned and drank it. This act shocked everyone there. After she graduated from the college, she was hired immediately by the Empire Hotel. At the age of 27, she was elected as the youngest congresswoman in her county. Three years later, she was elected into the Congress. At the age of 37, she became the youngest Minister of Postal Service. Later she also appointed as Minister of Consumer Department, Food Administration Department, Technology Department, and the Secretary of Liberal Democratic Party. She is the most potential Japan Prime Minister candidate. Her name is Seiko Noda.

† Matter has degree of importance, but work has no difference of noble or ignoble. It all depends on the attitude of the worker. God gave the world to men to manage and He did not set the value of each task. It is men who made the difference between high pay and low pay for jobs. Actually, every piece of work in Godís sight is equally important. Jesus did not claim to be Godís Son and despised the job of carpentry. As a teacher, He still washed his disciplesí feet. He cares for the poor, and defends for the weak. Apostle Paul emphasizes that we are all members in Christ. We should pay more attention to the weak one and try to help him to overcome his weakness. Therefore, in the church life, we should do our best to serve, not for the sake of men, but for the sake of God. Because everything we do, is doing for God. The value and meaning of a work should not be decided by others but by the one who works on it and the One who gives strength to the worker.
