 The Wit of an Atheist

"The fool says in his heart, There is no God." (Ps.14:1)

During the Terror of the French Revolution, there was a morning execution of three men: a rabbi, a priest, and a rationalist skeptic.  The executioner asked the rabbi if he had any last words.  The rabbi cried: “I believe in the one and only true God, and He shall save me!”  When the blade plunged down, it miraculously stopped just inches above his neck.  The crowd gasped: “It’s a miracle!”  And the leader had to let him go.  Next in line was the priest.  When asked for his final words, he exclaimed: “I believe in the Triune God and He shall save me!” Sure enough, the blade came down and stopped within inches above his neck once more.  The crowd cheered and he got let go.  Finally, it was the atheist’s turn.  The executioner urged him to say his final words.  He stared intently at the machine and seemed lost for a while.  Then with small voice he said: “I think I know what your problem is;” and pointed to a certain place with his finger, “You’ve have a tangled rope in the channel, right there!”

The Atheists believed himself to be more intelligent than the average person due to being rational.  But rationality should protect our spirituality not work against it.  Everyone is born with the ability to connect with our Creator and that is the function of our spirituality.  Our spiritual understanding has to be filtered by our reasoning in order not to be misled.  However, when we over emphasize rationality and ignore spirituality, we will fail to experience the existence of things beyond our rationality.

In recent sociological studies the tendency of society is towards the supernatural, especially for multicultural religious research.  Many social scientists agree that metaphysics goes beyond rationality.  In the United States, 38% of people who identified themselves as atheist or agnostic afterwards claimed to believe in God or a Higher Power.  Albert Einstein believed that the reason for the mistaken belief of atheism came from a belief that harmful superstitions and orthodox religion are the same thing.  The famous British Philosopher and longtime atheist Antony Flew gave up his belief in 2004 and stated an allegiance to deism.  During Charles Darwin, latter years of life, he offered his house for the local pastor to use and changed his schedule to allow his children to attend services.

If we think that we can control our destiny and don’t need God to interfere, then we are fooling ourselves.
