Atomic Bomb

"Woe to you, O destroyer, you who have not been destroyed." (Isaiah 33:1)

8:15 in the morning, Yasuhiko Taketa was on his way to middle school at the train station near the center of Hiroshima city.  Suddenly, he saw a bright white object even brighter than sun in the sky, then an earsplitting roar followed by a seismic explosion, and every glass window or door shattered around him.  He recalled, “My forehead felt hot, and I felt a monstrous fireball envelop me.  I looked at myself and found my clothes had turned into rags due to the heat.  My skin was peeling and just hanging there.”

This was one of many testimonies of what happened on August 6th seventy years ago, when the first atomic bomb was dropped in Japan.  The enormous powerful atomic bomb “little boy”, a ten thousand pounds weight of U-235 based atomic bomb that equals to 15,000 tons of TNT, exploded two thousand feet above the city of Hiroshima, there were one quarter of population of 350,000 residents were killed instantly, and an equal number of people died during the following three months.  70% of buildings were destroyed.  However, the details of the terrible bombing were hidden from the general public.  After the surrender of Japan and under the United States military governing of Japan, it wasn’t until the San Francisco Peace Treaty was signed in 1951 that the media was allowed to discuss the issue.

Nuclear weapons represent the self-mutilation of human nature.  The first account of a bloody fight between brothers was recorded in the Bible.  It shows that people cannot overcome selfish and jealous nature. Although some people say that the use of the atomic bomb shortened the Pacific War and eliminated the necessity of US invasion of Japan, which would then save millions of lives.  However such a weapon of mass destruction to human life is evil, no matter what.  Today, the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union is over, but world powers are still secretly updating their weapons of mass destruction.  Even many Third World countries would like to manufacture a nuclear bomb.  Every day we still live in the terrorist threat.  How can there be peace in the world?  The root of the problem of this world is the lack of a common governing authority, due to their contempt and disregard for the Creator.  God sent Jesus into the world for world peace and that mankind may return to God.  Only when we first make peace with God, then can we have a solid foundation for peace with other humans.
