Honesty

"Simply let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one." (Matt. 5:37)

In Gansu province, there was a second grade elementary school teacher who taught her students a saying: “Truthfulness is the foundation of all human virtues.”  Several days later, she received a thankyou card from a young couple who applauded her for teaching children about honesty.  The story behind it was that one of her student remembered the teacher’s lesson that day, and while riding home on the bus, he discovered a plastic bag on the backside of the seat.  With curiosity, he peeked inside of the bag and noticed that there were big rolls of hundred dollar bills.  The boy took the bag home and told his parents.  He asked his parents to help him to find the owner of this bag.  The parents brought their son to the local police department to register the case, and afterwards the police counted the money, to be ¥150,000 RMB.  Later on, the owner of the money showed up.  They had almost went crazy for losing the down payment for a house.  After they heard about how the boy returned the money, and how the teacher recently taught him about honesty, they were inspired to write a thank you letter to the teacher.

In the modern society, people often distain the importance of truthfulness and consider it as a sign of weakness.  Actually, they want others to be honest to them, but exempt themselves.  Just as the teacher said: “Honesty is the foundation of all virtues.”  If a person is not honest, whatever good deeds he does always seem to have some hidden agenda, then what good is it?  Without truthfulness in society, people cannot trust to each other; everyone has to protect his own interests, in order not to be cheated, this leads to a life full of distrust and anxiety. Therefore, Confucius said: “Cheating is the thief of conscience.”

Jesus said: “True worshipper will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.”  God wants us to be honest and He honors the truthfulness in our heart.  Although we may fail and become unclean due to our transgressions, but if we can truthful and face our sin with a repentant heart, and willing to receive the consequences of our failures, God will forgive us our sins and grant us grace.  People can cheat to each other, but no one can cheat God.  He knows what is in everyone’s heart.  If we tell a lie to gain some temporary benefits, but lose the blessing of God, how great a loss will it be!
