Keeping Promises

“Our God who keeps his covenant of love.” (Neh. 9:32)

During WWII, in the winter of 1944, a US commander led the Allies in a counter-attack, in Western Europe, which a battalion of 600 plus airborne landed in a small town called An Muer.  It had just gone through a snowstorm and was covered with thick white silver like blanket layer of snow.  The green uniforms on the soldiers made them obvious targets for the enemy and difficult to hide.  Someone suggested that they should ask the villagers and borrow some white sheets to camouflage themselves.  The battalion commander, named John Hanlon, went to the village mayor to ask for assistance.  Due to the repeated occupation of the Germans, the villagers were more than happy to help.  When the mayor rang the church bell, the word got out very quickly and everyone brought their white sheets to church.  They collected more than two hundred sheets of white linen.  John was so touched that he promised the villagers that once the weather clears and snow melts, he would return the sheets back to them.  But he soon realized that he could not keep his promise, because once the soldiers got the white sheets, they tore it into pieces and tied to their helmets, rifles, and covered their entire body, and not a single piece was left.  The next morning, the when Germans launched their attack, the US troops suffered only minor losses due to their camouflage.  A few days later, when the weather got better, John led his troops elsewhere and never returned the sheets.

Three years later, John read a news report, which discussed what happened that year in An Muer.  Some villagers said that the US military had promised to repay them with white sheets, but have not done so.  John wrote a letter to the newspaper, saying that he was the dishonest officer and would like to apologize.  When this letter was posted, many people reacted and donated linens to the villagers.  On February 1948, also in a snowy day, John returned to the village.  He stood in the front of the church and at the sound of the bell, he watched villagers flock to the church with great thanksgiving.

Trustworthiness is the first characteristic of honor.  We should not lightly give promises, but once we do, we must fulfill them.  Our God is most trustworthy, He never forsakes His promises.  Many times we lose trust and become unfaithful, yet He is still trustworthy.  In an era of disloyalty, Christians must keep trustworthy towards God and men.
