Payday Loan

"He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death." (Psalm 72:13)

Recently, the most popular store is not Starbucks or Panera Bread, but popping up all over the place is a business called "Payday" Loan.  The most convenient feature is that you can get a small loan to resolve an urgent cash need and in just two weeks, use the money from your paycheck to pay it off.  However, the interest on this type of usurious loan is not low; it typically ranges from 40% to 500%.

According to a consumer organization survey, such businesses that are unregulated by the government has caused many problems.  Payday Loan has twelve million customers in the United States.  This business loans out more than 50 billion dollars a year.  They charge 35 times more the interest charged by credit card companies.  And the average borrowing time is five months with a normal payment of $800 for a $300 loan.  In California, the average customer borrows six times a year; the amount is almost half of their salary.  This type of business is mostly concentrated in the poorer neighborhoods.  For example, a county in California with the most active of these types loan has an average per capita income of only $17,986, the unemployment rate as high as 15.8%.  Payday loans are usually no more than $500, there is no need for a credit check, just prove that you have a job and that you can write a check and the money is immediately transferred to your bank account.  After you get your paycheck, you will need to pay it off otherwise your check will be cashed.

Are payday loans good or bad, it is hard to say.  Some people think that it can help some urgent needs; other people think that it is a scam of heartless capitalists taking advantage over the poor.  Nevertheless, the social disparity of wealth is indeed getting worse.  The 1% of the world's richest has 48% of the wealth; the 85 richest people have equal the sum of the poorer half of the world's 3.5 billion population.  This phenomenon continues to increase.  We all know that this type of inequality is the root cause of unrest.

The Bible instructs Christians not to ignore the problem of poverty.  When Jesus came to the earth, He cared for the poor and the weak; He also fought for their rights, and did as much as possible to help them.  He appealed to the wealthy to voluntarily give to the poor. He himself was made poor for us.  Would you be willing to donate some money to help the poor children in remote village areas?
