Forbearance

"In His forbearance, He forgave the sins committed beforehand." (Romans 3:24)

Once Dr. Booker T. Washington, the founder of the first National Historical Campus, the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, passed by a house of a wealthy family, he was stopped by the woman of the house.  She assumed that Washington was one of the yard workers, that her husband had hired.  She asked him if he would chop some wood for her.  Professor Washington smiled, nodded, took off his coat, and chopped the wood.  When he carried an armload of wood into the kitchen, a servant recognized him and rushed to tell the mistress his true identity, of being the principal of a local black college.

The next morning, the mistress went to Washington's office and apologized profusely for her mistake.  She repeatedly said that she did not know it was he that she put to work.  Washington replied with great kindness, "It's entirely all right, madam, I like to work, and I'm delighted to do favors for my friends."  The woman was so touched by his manner and willingness to forgive that she gave a great sum of money to the institute.  In addition to that, she persuaded many of her wealthy acquaintances to do likewise.  In the end, Dr. Washington raised as much money for the institute from this one act of chopping wood as he did from any other fund-raising event.

Consideration for others is a virtue.  A person with true value or broad heart does not need others to confirm his own position.  Tolerating others not only respects others, but also respects oneself.  Dr. Washington was a black slave born out of wedlock that did not know who his father was.  His mother married a slave and went to the free area.  He worked part time at a mine to support himself through the college.  After graduation, he went back South to devote himself in academics.  In 1900, he became a leader of the black civil rights movement.  Not like later leaders that fight use violent protests, he advocated improving education to upgrade social status of blacks.  He was a true leader.

Our worth comes from our Creator that made us. Knowing God is the foundation of knowing one self. Our Lord has great tolerance and a broad heart.  He is merciful when we show our disrespect for Him and forgives us our transgressions.  If we all can follow our Lord Jesus' example: when being reviled not to respond, when beaten not to fight back, then this world will have true peace.
