Ebola Nightmare

"A man's spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can hear?" (Prov. 18:14)

Recently in West Africa the powerful infectious Ebola virus is spreading, causing global panic. America's first patient, Eric Duncan had died.  The 48 people who had contacted with him are being closely monitored for 21 days incubation period, some of them are medical personnel.  When Mr. Duncan was in Liberia, he took care of his friend with Ebola and then later entered the United States.  The complexity of this started from the first time he went to the hospital, then back home, then three days later he went back again, and then was diagnosed with Ebola and quarantined.

The Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976, by investigators discovered that virus from monkeys and bats had infected humans in Zaire (Republic of Congo) along the Ebola River.  There were four outbreaks in the past; the symptoms are: vomiting, fever, diarrhea, internal bleeding, which leads to organ failure and death.  The incubation period is 8-10 days after infection with the longest being 21 days.  In the past the mortality rate was 53% to 88%.  This fifth round mortality rate is more than 90%.  The real source of the virus is not clear, and there is no medical cure, currently there are only a few experimental drugs available.

Since the 80’s, the AIDS epidemic lasted three decades which has caused thirty three million deaths globally.  Recent studies have shown that the AIDS virus and Ebola virus come from the same source.  In sub-Saharan Africa countries, approximately one person in twenty adults has AIDS.  The Ebola virus is more easily transmitted than HIV and has a higher mortality rate.  If the disease progresses similar to AIDS then the result would be unfathomable.

These things remind us: Firstly, that we are living in a dangerous and cursed world.  People need to be cautious and keep the body and spirit clean, not only to prevent from infectious diseases, but also from evil.  Secondly, we need to cooperate and help each other to bravely fight the virus and be compassionate on those who are sick.  Imagine, if Ebola has infected the people around you, what would you do?

Of course, all suffering and trials have one goal in bringing us to rely on God.  The body is the temporary residence of the spirit, pay attention to your health, while also focusing on your spiritual health.
