 Hospitality

  "Practice hospitality." (Romans 12:13)

Many years ago, there was an old woman holding an umbrella and standing in front of a large department store in Philadelphia.  No one paid attention to her, not even the store clerk.  However, after a while, a young clerk noticed her and came over to ask her if there was anything that he could help her with?  She said that she just there sheltering from the rain.  Although the clerk was not able to sell anything to her, he brought her a chair and politely asked the old lady to sit down.  After the rain stopped, the lady thanked the young man, and before leaving and asked him for a business card.  Not long afterwards, the store's general manager received a letter, specifically requesting that the young man go to her luxury villa in Scotland, to complete the decorations.  As the young man packed to leave for Scotland, he was promoted to manager of the branch department store.  This old lady happened to be none other than the richest steel magnate Carnegie's mother.

True hospitality comes from a heart that is open and welcoming of others.  The most highest and noble aspect of relationships between people is being cordial with one another.  Someone who is willing to host, could be hosted by others.  Imagine if someone took their children to church to attend the Friday evening children's program to learn about God; but some brothers and sisters refused to welcome them, how can the pastor not be angry?  A same situation occurred, when the Lord Jesus rebuked the disciples for refusing to serve those who were unseemly (Matthew 19:13).  He taught his disciples if someone refused them, to leave, and shake the dust off that place, so that it would be punished. (Matt 6:11).  Even more so, Christians should be enthusiastic in welcoming people. Abraham received guests, which unknowingly to him were angels, and received the joyful message that he was going to have a child in his old age. (Matt. 13: 2).

Ushers are an important part of the Welcome Ministry.  Hospitality from a church Welcome Ministry gives people a first impression.  Everyone feels strange in a new environment, but when Ushers help people feel a welcome and at home, this also prepares their heart to worship God.  Brothers and sisters should look forward to every opportunity to welcome new friends and inviting them to return.  Maybe there will be a good report in the future!
