 Benevolence vs. Cruelty

You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.” (Psalms 69:19)

James Foley was a freelance battlefield news reporter that worked in civil war torn Syria.  In November 2012, he was captured by the terrorist organization called IS.  They requested a ransom and did not get it, so they beheaded him and posted the video on the Internet, which caused great concern around the world.

Foley was born in a devoted Catholic family in New Hampshire.  After graduating from college he joined the USAID project in Iraq.  In 2010, he became a military embedded-journalist in Afghanistan.  One year later, he went to Libya to join the rebel fighters and was captured for 44 days.  After he was released, he went back to his hometown for a visit.  He then went to Syria as a freelance journalist and was captured by ISIS.  IS asked a ransom of $132 million was denied.  In June 2014, President Obama authorized a rescue operation but failed. Finally, he was beheaded by an IS in August.

Foley asked his colleagues that were freed from prison to deliver a letter to his family.  He wrote: “I remember going to the mall with Dad, the very long bike rides with Mom, I remember so many great family times that take me away from this prison.  Dreams of family and friends take me away and happiness fills my heart.  I know you are thinking of me and praying for me.  And I am so thankful.  I feel you all especially when I pray.  I pray for you to stay strong and believe.  I really feel that I can touch you even in this darkness when I pray.”

Recently, ISIS has taken the largest Christian inhabited city of Qaraqosh.  They continue to execute Christians, killing young people, selling women as sex slaves, etc.  Crisis Relief International has a station near there with several co-workers that has decided not to withdraw because of the great needs.  They still are facing tremendous danger.  Let us continue to remember them in our prayers.

In such a dark time of deliberate attacks on God's children, we need courageous and faithful warriors who are willing to pray and to standup for the testimony of the Gospel of the true God.  We believe that although the enemy is furious, Christ is the victorious king.  His rule over all things is inevitable and will come soon, as long as we are willing to continually be alert and pray.
