 Good Deeds

"Give thanks to the Lord Almighty, for the Lord is good; his love endures forever." (Jer. 33:11)

Recently, Mr. Chen Gung-Biao, a self proclaimed “China’s First Philanthropist”, came to the United States to show off his philanthropy.  First, he claimed he wanted to purchase the New York Times.  Then he invited the poor and homeless in New York to a banquet at a fancy restaurant in New York’s Central Park.  He promised to give each person $300.  He later was advised not to give the poor the money and withdrew his idea.  He was scolded by his guests and later he was cheated $30,000 by some no name organization for the title of “the World Most Greatest Philanthropist”.  This Chinese billionaire came to the U.S. to give money away for fame and publicity; instead what he received was criticism and return home in shame.

Mr. Chen claimed he was cultivating Chinese’ good will in order to promote good deeds and encourage rich people to donate money to the poor.  He said only by promoting charity in a high-profile fashion would it stimulate other Chinese to change their habits of spending on themselves.  He did a lot of advertisement for his charity work.  The first thing he did after returning from the United States was to visit the tomb of Lei Feng to honor him and report his good deeds.  How pitiful is it when a person does not know God.  He does not know what to do and whom to please.  He thought that a dead person could bless him. Many people consider his charity work nothing but a selfish intent to accumulate merits for himself, or to gain fame and reputation, or to extend public relation for his business.  His upmost purpose is to benefit himself.

The Bible teaches us that charity is not for enriching ourselves, but to glorify God.  If we do good deeds in order to gain personal vain glory, we then defy God who gives us wisdom and the resources.  If we did not respect the sovereignty and mercy of God, our human-oriented good deeds will eventually lead us to pride and arrogance, or as a means to control others, or to gain more benefits.  Confucius traveled around to seek support for the implementation of benevolence, because he knew without authority to back it up he could not educate people to do good deeds.  For generations, Chinese rulers have used Confucianism or Buddhism to govern the nation, but ultimately failed.  The main reason is that men are not trustworthy and only trust themselves.  They do not trust in God and don’t know how to fear God.  God-fearing people will follow the will of God to do good deeds that can truly help people and lead them to God.
