 The Rich Second Generation

“It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury.”

(Prov. 19:10)

Recently, at an intersection, at two o'clock in the morning, at Los Angeles Monterey Park; a Ferrari 458 Italia was wrecked by a Hyundai.  The driver of the sports car was killed instantly and the passenger was seriously injured.  The cause for the wreck was by the drunk Hyundai driver.  According to the investigation, the Ferrari owner was a 21 years old Chinese student, who recently bought the $230,000 luxury car, and often drove it within the vicinity of urban areas at high speeds of 70 miles per hour.

"The rich second generation" of China's soaring economy over the past decade has become a trademark. With the increase of wealth of the people, many parents work hard to earn money, but give it to their children in a large heap.  In order to avoid strong competition from entering the university, they just send their children abroad to study.  From high school to university, the ages are getting younger and younger.  Just for the University of Southern California, more than half of the 8,000 students are from China.  The spending power of these students is amazing.  Businesses nearby are doing well.  The University of Illinois at Champaign has the most enrolled students from China, in the US.  At the end of the semester, the nearby Macy's, had a special sale for the wealthy children returning home; even though they originally close at 6 p.m. all employees were required to work overtime till 10 p.m., they hired Mandarin speaking staff, gave discounts and gifts.  Many Chinese students go to Chicago’s 3 star restaurant Michelin, for a meal that costs at least a thousand dollars for two.  A Chinese freshman bought several purses, costing two thousand dollars, at a designer bag shop in New York, to give to her mother, which shocked her American friends.

During “The 90’s” the young people grew up during China’s meteoric rise in economy.  They simply have not experienced hard work or poverty.  Due to their lack of moral standards and spiritual mentorship, they use materialism and spending as a measurement of their self worth.  They are going to the edge of the cliff, but do not know what their next step in life is.  A picture of many innocent faces, desiring to be fill their brain with knowledge, however not able to input a little bit of humble nobility.  What can we do to help these young people?  How do we lead them out of the maze of the materialism?  How may God's eternal love be shared with them?  This is what us older Christians should be thinking about.
