Weekly Article

What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”    (Micah 6:8)

The word Apartheid comes from the Afrikaans language meaning “the state of being apart.”  It was a system of forced racial segregation in South Africa through legislation by the government from 1948 to 1994. Under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants were curtailed and where Afrikaner minority rule was maintained.  The government forced black people to live in certain areas with inferior public services.  The money spent on white school students was ten times of the money spent on black students.  Black and White intermarriage was strictly prohibited.  The places Whites went to Blacks could not go.  The Churches became the only place to challenge that law.  This unequal policy met many challengers, including Black opposition and national economic sanctions.  One of the most famous opposing person was Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela was born into a family of royal tribal leaders.  He graduated from two universities and received a law degree.  As a practicing lawyer, he repeatedly was arrested for participating in peaceful demonstrations against government.  In 1962, he joined a Communist militant organization and was sentenced to life in prison after his arrest.  He spent 27 years in prison.  In 1990, he was released, after much pressure from international solidarity.  Four years later, in the first public election, he was elected South Africa’s first black president.  Until then, the draconian policies of racial segregation was utterly abolished.  After Mandela came to power, he was committed to reduce the gap between rich and poor.  Through a series of legislations and a new constitution, he greatly improved human rights.  He advocated reconciliation and drew the opposition to his cabinets.

Mandela was once regarded as a humanist saint, widely respected internationally and was given a Nobel Peace Prize.  But he did not publicly express his faith, nor govern his family well.  He had two broken marriages which brought his decedents to fight for family fortune.  No one can inherit his great achievement.  The last six months, he was unconsciously lying on his bed.

If a person did not give glory to God and received glory for himself, and the people did not learn from him to fear to God, then he missed the most important one of his life.
