Degeneration and Longevity

“Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 18:3)

With the growth of the postwar baby-boomers, the United States has gradually become a society of white-haired people.  More and more "old" people enter the traditional age of retirement, 65 years old.  But with advances in medical technology, plus awareness of healthy lifestyles, the average life span in the past two decades has increased 4.6 years for men (76 years old) and 2.7 years for women (81 years old).

With the spending habits of Americans increasing, and children's education costs surging, the retirement savings has greatly been reduced, and when they reach retirement age, they are incapable of retirement and must continue to work.  When their pensions are shrinking and social security is drying up, many people delay their retirement.  Therefore, the traditional definition for “old” was retire, but now the term is rehire.

In fact, it is not only the physical condition of getting old, it is also what is in the mind.  Some people are just entering middle age and it is quite obvious they are getting old, while others are seventy and the party of life has just begun.  When President George HW Bush was 85 years old he parachute jumped to celebrate.  British Indian Fauja Singh, was a hundred years old and was still able to finish the Toronto marathon.  Just take good care of your body, have extensive knowledge of disease prevention, and with the aid of modern medical technology, living to age one hundred is not difficult.  But the question is what is the meaning of life?  One does not just live for life!

In fact the body ages through time and cannot return, but the health of a person’s spirit and mind can become younger.  It depends on how one exercises spiritually to keep young.  By putting away worldly thoughts, concerns, philosophies of being self serving; but having a simple and pure heart, constantly coming before the Lord of creation and by following His leading and relying on His power; can we keep our spirit young.  As we prioritize our tasks and try to benefit others, it will give the highest glory to God.  In this way, does life have meaning.  Don’t worry about getting old, because the spirit does not age with the body.  The Lord Jesus said: “Let the children come to me!” (Mark 10:14)  If our spirit becomes younger and younger like children, that fulfills the desire of our Lord and we may enter in the Kingdom of Heaven. The future is forever.
