Eel Frys

"As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me." (John 9:4)

Eels grow in the river.  When they become mature, they migrate to the sea to spawn.  After spawning they die.  The eel fry cannot breed artificially and has to rely on the natural migratory eels to be caught by the fisherman in the sea, then be put into ponds, to grow until become mature to supply the market needs.  When I was young, I saw fishermen risk their lives by going in the cold seawater during winter, to catch eel fry.  They often had accidents, but since the eel frys are expensive and highly in demand and a seasonal catch would provide for half of year a family’s living cost. Therefore, people risked their lives to catch eel fry.  They have to catch the eel fry during the right time.  If they missed the season, they can only show empty hands and sigh.

Jesus wants us to be fishers of men.  We can learn from the fishermen, on how they are diligent and dedicated to their work.  Every year many undergraduate students come to North America to study.  They have just graduated from the high school and are without any life experience, just like those young eels that migrate to the New Continent to seek opportunities in life.  They have to pass many tests and many hardships in order to survive.  We can be a fisher of men to help them in a loving environment to grow, so that they can become stronger in their lives.

For those young people, there are several concerns: First, they need English conversation skills.  Often in the beginning, language is the greatest obstacle that discourages them the most.  Second, they need guidance and help, not only in the academic arena but also in decision making, or getting along with others, courtship, etc.  They suffer from pain and mistakes of self-exploration.  Third, they need loving care and encouragement.  Leaving their parents as the only child in house, they easily feel loneliness and solitude even with daily communication with their parents.  Fourth, they need to have peer groups.  They need friends that can help them to develop their capabilities of dealing with problems, exercise their skills, and mutual help of each other.

Look at our church; is it not just right for us to provide them with their needs?  Dear brothers and sisters, why not take this opportunity to stretch out your hand, and be a good, helpful, and influential person in their lives?
