 Rules in Church

"Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified." (Galatians 3:1)

Once at a monastery there was an abandoned cat that went in and a kindly monk adopted it.  But during the vespers, the cat called, so the monk tied it with a rope and kept it close by.  After some time passed the cat died, when another stray cat came in, the monk did the same thing with this cat.  After the monk died, other monks took in abandoned cats and did the same as well.  Over time, the monastery had a custom of having a cat tied nearby during the vespers.  It became a part of a ritual.  Later, some monks began to talk about the relationship between cat and vespers.  Some monks even wrote treatises about the necessity of tying a cat close by, during public prayer.

Habit becomes nature, when we do the same thing over and over.  In every culture, there are traditions that have a reason, in the beginning.  But over time, the meaning has become lost and all reason behind it has disappeared.  Then it evolves into a tradition, which everyone just follows without thinking about what it really means.  Many of the church rules came about this way.  Some rules may not necessary, but no one is willing to change them.  In fact, principles in the Bible should be very simple.  The basic teaching is very clear.  We do not have to add rules.  Many biblical principles are intrinsic, and relate to our personal relationship with Christ.  As for the external manifestations, that should come from the inner convictions.  This does not mean using external rules to govern our behaviorEven as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.  (1 Cor. 10:33).

There was a Catholic priest who noticed a person getting on the bus with him to work.  Every time the man got on the bus, he would do the gesture of crucifix with his hand in front of his chest.  The priest thought: “what a devote Catholic this man is, I definitely need to talk to him”.  So once he intentionally got off the bus with this man and greeted him.  He said: “I am glad that you are a devote Catholic.”  “Who’s Catholic?”  said the man surprisingly.  The priest said: “Every time I watched you get on the bus, you did a hand gesture of the crucifix.”  The man replied: “That’s not what I meant, I just touch my wallet and glasses to check to see if they are still there, and to make sure that my tie is straight, and that my pant is fasten by a belt.”
