Unpredictable Events

"Put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption." (Psalms 130:7)

Ms. Yue Zhang was a poor village girl from Hebei Province.  Her father worked at odd jobs out of town. Her mother was a teacher at a village primary school. Their life was very impoverished.  Her mother suffered from cerebral vein blockage and exhausted their resources.  Their family was heavily fined because they exceeded the quota, by having three children.  Yue studied very hard, and was always the first in her class. She was admitted to the best middle school in the county, and then attended the high school without needing to take the admission test.  Due to her superior performance, she was admitted to the Southern Medical University in Guangzhou in 2009.  She admits that she is not that smart, but seized every moment to learn.  She was also involved in extra curriculum: helping AIDS patients, visiting a nursing home, and helping others.

Unfortunately, in March of this year, she suddenly felt ill and lost strength.  She had a check-up at the hospital and found that she has acute T lymphoblastic leukemia.  This was a heavy blow to her, not only that she could not raise money to pay for the treatment, she also had to quit school.  She said to herself: “I have no chance to repay my parents, or to contribute to the community, so should I be in a hurry to go (die) now?  I believe that this illness is a special gift from God which will make me stronger!”  The medical expenses were very expensive, three months of chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants would cost 800,000 Yuan.  The teachers and students from the university helped to raise funds.  With the help of the Guangzhou news media, she received 480,000 Yuan for her fund, within three months.  However this was not enough, but she had confidence that she would be able to win this battle.

During major calamities, we will realize how limited and fragile we are.  However, we also can see how faith can make a person strong.  None of us should boast that we do not need help from others, even with the most basic needs we need to rely on God’s provision.  We all may have some unpredictable factors of serious disease hidden inside us.  It may come out unexpectedly, we should always keep a grateful heart in our daily lives.  We should do our best to fulfill our duties, when we still have the chance.  We should keep a joyful heart and look for God’s mercy and grace in every moment of our life.
