Help the Poor

"He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done." (Prov. 19:17)

In the United States, the wealthiest country in the world still has 14.5% of households struggling to put food on the table, this includes 16.2 million children. The hunger problem of America is not the lack of food, but dysfunctional families and jobless parents.  The government has enough programs fighting hunger, but many children that come from single parent homes or lacking parental care, do not have their nutrition needs met.  Besides the Food Stamp Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, the National School Lunch Program, there are 12 other nutrition programs run by the U.S. government.  However, there are still are 10 million children that do not have breakfast each day.  This situation becomes even severe during the summer.  More than one in seven people lives below poverty line, which is $22,113 for a family of four.  One quarter of African-Americans lives under it.  More than 51% Americans live in poverty at some point before age 65.

There are about 1.6 million homeless people in the U.S.  Most live in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Houston, one fifth lives in California; due to houses being too expensive in the big cities and family problems, the homeless problem is more severe there.  We may think that they are lazy people do not want to work.  However, only 15% of them are chronic.  Most have financial problems, cannot find jobs, and lost their homes, or were kicked out by their spouse or parents.  63% of homeless women have been abused by their spouses, and 16% of homeless people have mental problems.  Of course, alcohol and drugs are major reasons for them being homeless.

As Christians we have an obligation to follow Jesus’ command: to look after these “least brothers” (Matthew 25:35-40).  In Southern California, there is a Chinese church that has joined effort with six American churches to take care of homeless people.  They open their building for the homeless to stay overnight. They offer meals and other entertainment programs and share the Gospel through their actions.  We cannot overlook the existence of the poor in our society.  God wants us to share our blessing to others.  Helping the poor is a real demonstration of the true love of Jesus Christ.
