House Calls

“Whoever is kind to the needy, honors God.(Prov. 14:31)

In a small town, Dr. Rolling was about to leave his small clinic, when there came a frantic knocking at the door.  He was wondering, who was knocking on his door so urgently.  When he opened the door, he saw a frightened little girl, not more than nine years old, standing there in great anxiety.  “Oh doctor, I beg you, to please come with me.  My mom is surely dying, she is as sick as she can be.”  Dr. Rolling answered: “I am sorry dear, I don’t make house calls.  Bring your mother here to me.”  The little girl began to cry: “But she’s too sick.  She cannot even get out of bed.  So you must come with me, or I fear she will die.”  The doctor touched by her devotion, decided that he would go visit her mom.  He cleaned up and took several bottles of medicine and left with the little girl.

As Dr. Rolling went into the run down house, he saw a woman lying on the bed.  She was so sick that she couldn’t even raise her head.  Dr. Rolling examined her condition and gave some medicine for the women to take.  After a while, the women’s fever came down and she went to sleep.  The doctor told the girl: “Don’t worry, your mother will be fine.  I will come back tomorrow to check on her again.”

The next day, he came back to visit the woman and found her much better.  She could sit on her bed and talk.  The woman thanked the doctor for saving her life.  Dr. Rolling said: “You don’t have to thank me.  If it was not for your daughter’s pleading, I would not have made a house visit.  How proud you must be of your wonderful little girl.”  “My daughter?  My daughter passed away three years ago.  Look at the picture on the wall.  There she is.”  The doctor’s legs went limp.  The girl’s picture on the wall was the same girl that knocked on his clinic door!  Was it her angel?

In life, someone may suddenly plead for our help.  How should we respond?  We could harden our heart and ignore it.  We can delay and procrastinate in doing right.  Or we can also treat it is an opportunity for doing a good deed.  May be it is God who calls us to do it.  Through our good deed it may save a soul.  We do not need to guess how God will deliver His message.  The most important matter is how we respond to His calling and complete His will.
