Good Stewardship

ďEach one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering Godís grace in its various forms.Ē(1 Peter 4:10)

In 2010, there were 1.54 million individuals with bankruptcy cases in court, which was 8% more than the year before. How should we Christians handle our money in the light of Godís teaching?

1. Transfer ownership- Our lives belong to God, as well as everything else we possess. When we depart from this world, we cannot take anything with us. It says that God lends everything for us to use. Only through faith, can we transfer the ownership to Him, so that we can use the materials in the way God intends us to.

2. Establish a tithe- God wanted the Israelites to tithe in order to teach them to put God first. Tithe is not the goal, but the beginning of learning not to spend money for ourselves, but for others.

3. Accept God's provision- God provides our daily needs. If we do not have enough money to spend, it is because we really donít need it. Not every child needs to go to college, and not everyone should live in a huge mansion.

4. Get out and stay out of debt- Self-discipline is the only sure way to get out debt. To owe money to others is a reflection of disobedience to Godís commandments and a symbol of the curse. If we have to borrow money to make a purchase, we should borrow only the portion that we can pay back, if we have to resell the property. We should pay it off as soon as possible.

5. Put others first- Christians should not just care only for their needs, but also for others. It is more blessed to give than to receive.

6. Avoid indulgence- Make sure of our needs, not our wants. Self-indulgence makes debt. If we compare with others, we will feel that we need more. Sometimes we chase after tax loopholes, but end up paying more. To live a simple live is desired, in Godís sight.

7. Avoid snap decisions- Delaying purchases is the best way to fight against consumption of capitalism. Before making a major purchase, we should pray to ask for Godís guidance. Never trust in quick ways to make fortunes.

†† Being a good financial steward of God is not an easy task. But one day, we all will have to make an account before God. It will be too late to regret at that moment.
