Unabandoned love

Ephraim, how can I abandon you ... my heart is changed, all my compassion is aroused.(Ho 1:8)

At the age of 22, Amanda’s life looked very cold and bleak on April 2009, Lake Ontario, New York; She was a mess. When she was young, her parents divorced and a court ordered restraining order did not allow her father to come close to her. She got married in high school and her husband abused her. A year later they divorced. Afterwards lived with someone and got pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl. Her daughter’s father left them. She was out of job and was idling at home. She knew nothing of motherhood, she left her daughter to go out and play every weekend. She complained that God ignored her, so she stopped going to church.

One day, Amanda took her daughter to visit her friend named Keifer. She let his mother watch over her daughter, then went boating on a lake, with Keifer and another high school classmate named Doug. When they were offshore for some distance, the weather suddenly deteriorated, the wind became blustery. Their boat was found to have cracks which let in the cold water. The two boys began to desperately paddle back to shore, but the wind continuously blew them back. The boys thought that the water was shallow, so they jumped into the water, but it was too to cold for them to bear. They tried to get back in the boat, but tipped the boat over and all three of them fell into the water. Amanda thought of her baby, who may never know her.

Ed Fillingham was 75 years-old. He was a stonemason and had strong arms like a bear. But ever since he had Parkinson's disease, he could not even tie his shoes. He, his wife, and daughter lived beside the lake. When he was in the yard, he heard his wife's yelling, and pointing in the direction of the three young people struggling in the icy water. Instinctively, he put a canoe in the water, and paddled. He prayed to God to give him strength. But having Parkinson's made it almost impossible to control his direction. Suddenly, he felt God pushing him to reach out to the girl. Ed said to her: "Grab my hand, not the boat!” The two boys also held on to the rope. The four of them swam slowly for 1500 feet in the icy water and reached the shore. Soon, ambulances came and sent them to the hospital. Everyone was out of danger.

That night, Amanda held her daughter tightly and cried out to God: "O God, thank you for not giving up on me, because you love me; just as I love my daughter and will never abandon her."
