† ďThe Word became flesh and made his dwelling
among us.Ē (John 1:14)
†† Once upon a time, there was a professor who lived in a house on a hill. He
was a kind and decent person, generous to his family, upright in all his
dealings with people. Although he was not against Christianity, he didn't believe in the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Every Sunday, he tried to stay away from his wife,
who always brought the children to church.
Christmas Eve, he told his wife: "I am truly sorry to distress you, but I simply
cannot understand this claim that God became man. Jesus was merely a person, why do people have to make him a God? It doesn't make any sense to me." His wife did not say anything. "If I go, I'd feel like a hypocrite," he explained.
"I'd rather stay at home. But I'll wait up for you." So his wife and children went to
church for the service without him.
†† Shortly after his family drove away in the
car, snow began to fall; he saton
his chair by the fireside and began to read his book.
A few minutes later, he was startled by a thumping sound,
which was quickly followed by another, then another. He thought that someone
was throwing snowballs at his window. When he went to the
front door to investigate, he found that a birdin desperate search
for shelter had tried to fly through his window. Out of the goodness of his heart, he went upstairs to the penthouse,
opened the window, and tried to let the bird in. But the bird still struggled
in the snow and refused to fly in. "Food will bring them in," he
thought. So he took some breadcrumbs and sprinkled it on the sill. But
the bird still didn't come in, and just continued to
flop around helplessly in the snow. "Itís a stupid
creature," he said to himself. "And I can't seem to think of any
way to let them know they can trust me. If only I could be a bird myself for
a few minutes, perhaps I could lead them to safety..."
†† Just at that moment, the church bells began to
ring. He stood silently for a while. Suddenly, a thought came into his mind. ďYou are the foolish bird, why canít you
trust Me and return to Godís house?"
†† Jesus came to earth to spread the Good
News. Because of our foolishness, He had to take the form of man in order to
lead us into the Fatherís house.
