Amazing Election

Chosen by God and precious to him.(1 Peter 2:4)

God had a marvelous arrangement for His own chosen servant, Hudson Taylor, the greatest missionary to China. His father James Taylor came from a godly family. He became a local Methodist preacher at 19. After completing his apprenticeship in pharmacy at 24, he returned home to open a dispensary. The same year, he married Amelia Hudson. One day, they read the book, Narrative of a Voyage by Captain Basil Hall, he then became burdened for China. They prayed that if God gave them a son, they would dedicate him to God’s service. God indeed blessed them with a son whom they named James Hudson Taylor. Amelia Taylor was born into a minister’s family. At the age of 16, she began tutoring outside of home to help with the family’s finances. After she married was to James, she always supported his ministry. At the early age of 5, Hudson Taylor would often accompany his father to the countryside to preach. He had compassion for the unsaved. When he was 7, the family read the book China and Chinese by Peter Parley together; it caught the children’s imagination and had a great influence to Hudson’s decision to China.

As a teenager, Hudson’s faith went through a time of testing. His mother and sister prayed earnestly for him daily. In June 1849, when Hudson was 17, his mother went to visit her sister in Barton-on-Humber. One day she had an intense yearning for the conversion of her son that she went to her room to pray, resolved not to leave the room until her prayers were answered. At the same time, 50 miles away, Hudson was reading a Gospel tract, and greatly moved by the Holy Spirit. He fell down on his knees to accept Jesus as his Savior. Two weeks later, when the mother returned and chat to each other, they realized it was God’s arrangement.

After his conversion, Hudson longed to dedicate himself to God. He made up his mind and wanted to be a missionary to China and began to study medicine. Once while dissecting a fevered corpse, he fell gravely ill. His professor thought there was no hope, but God healed him. He wanted to leave for China as soon as possible, but his fiancé’s father refused to allow his daughter to go to China. Nothing was able to change his heart. After half a year of difficult voyage, Hudson arrived in China and started another chapter of his life’s story of the China Inland Mission.
