This is Good

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”(Gen. 50:20)

Once there was a small tribe in Africa whose chief, liked hunting. One day a missionary came to visit the village. Because of his friendly attitude, he was well received by the tribal people. Not long afterwards, he became a friend of the chief. The missionary gave the chief a rifle as a gift. He patiently taught the chief how to use the rifle. The chief was very impressed. The missionary had a habit of remarking about every situation “good” or “bad”, “This is good!”

One day the chief and his missionary friend were out on a hunting expedition. When they spotted a wild pig, the missionary loaded the gun for the chief. Apparently he did something wrong while preparing the rifle, because after the chief took and fired the gun, his thumb was blown off. As usual the missionary friend remarked: “This is good!” The chief was angry and had his friend sent to jail.

After a while, the chief went out to hunt again. He was separated from his men and lost in the jungle. Afterwards was captured by some cannibals. They took him to their village, tied him up, and were getting ready to set him on the fire. Just as the cannibals were about to kill the chief, they noticed that the chief was missing a thumb. Being superstitious, they never ate anyone that was less then whole. So they decided not to kill the chief and sent him on his way. As the chief returned home, he remembered the event that had taken his thumb off and felt remorse for his treatment of his missionary friend. He went to jail and spoke with the missionary. Your were right, it was good that my thumb was blown off.” He told his friend the whole story and released him from jail. He said: “Please don’t take offense” in which, his friend replied, “This is good!”, “What do you mean?” said the chief. The missionary explained: “If I had not been in jail, I would have been with you. If both of us were captured, I would be the one to be eaten!”

All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. (Rom.8:28) Without His permission nothing can happen to us. With His permission nothing that happens to us is bad. If we love Him, and are willing to do His will, even in the worst of situations, He will lead us through.
