Blood Transfusion

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.(John 6:56)

The transfusion of blood has been practiced as early as in the fifteenth century. At that time, nobody knew the function of blood in the human body, nor the difference of blood types. Most people considered bleeding to be more effective than blood transfusion. Some even transfused sheep’s blood into the patient’s veins.  It was not until the nineteenth century, did people begin to understand the theory of the circulation of blood.  A British physician named James Blundell gave blood transfusions to the bleeding women during their delivery of babies.  Out of fifteen cases, he was able to save eleven lives.  In the WWI, blood transfusions became a normal way to save wounded soldiers.  By WWII, people found ways to preserve and to prevent blood from clotting; donation of blood became a common everyday life practice.  Even so, the traditional concept of blood as the essence of life still dominates many people’s minds, especially in oriental societies.  A famous missionary, Paul Brand had once told the story of what happened in India.  His patient a twelve-year-old girl had serious lung disease and a portion of it had to be removed.  There was not enough blood to be transfused.  He had a long discussion with the patient’s family and asked them to donate blood.  Finally, after threatening to abandon the operation, they sent an elderly and weak lady to do it.  The doctor had to draw his own blood in order to motivate them to come forward. He had to practice it once every one or two weeks.

Jesus established the Holy Communion to remind us that he died on the cross and shed his blood to save us.  He used his clean blood to wash away our sins, in order to give us new life.  When we partake the bread and cup, we are reminded that Christ has dwelled inside us through the work of the Holy Spirit.  Only through Him, can we live out a new life to replace our old self.  What we can merely do is to accept it by faith; that our sins have been forgiven, after our true confessions and repentance.  He is the one who has all power in removing our sins from us with His own blood. This is another way to look at the meaning of transfusion.
