The Race

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” (Eccl. 9:10)

Daniel was eight years old and had been in Cub Scouts for a while.  One time the Cub Master handed everyone a sheet of paper, a block of wood and four tire wheels and told them to go home and complete it with their fathers as homework.  To Daniel, this was not an easy matter, because his parents were separated a long time ago and his father lived a long distance away.  Even though his mother tried to help him, she could not figure it out; Daniel still did not give up.  He sawed the wood block and shaped it into a derby car all by himself.  It finally was completed and a little lopsided, but it looked great at least through his mom’s eyes.  Daniel’s pride of his blue car came with knowing that he did it all on his own.

The big night came.  Daniel’s father could not make it, so his mom went with him.  She wore some blue jeans with a cap.  With his blue derby in his hand and pride in his heart, Daniel and his mom headed to the big race.  When Daniel saw all of the other scout’s father-son partnership car, his pride immediately turned to humility.  Their cars were made with cool paint jobs and sleek body styles.  A few of the boys giggled as they looked at Daniel’s unattractive vehicle.  Even worse, was that he was the only boy without a man at his side.  Others from single parent homes at least had an uncle, but Daniel had a “mom.”

The race began in elimination fashion.  One by one the cars raced down the smooth ramp.  To everyone’s surprise, Daniel’s car survived several races.  Finally, it came down between Daniel and the sleekest, fastest looking car there.  As the last race was about to begin, the shy boy asked if they could stop the race for a minute, because he wanted to make a prayer.  The race stopped, Daniel prayed in earnest for a moment.  Then he stood up and placed his car on the ramp.  As the crowed cheered, two cars rushed down the ramp, and Daniel’s car finished a fraction of a second behind the winner.  Daniel leaped into air and took his racecar to his mother.  Mom comforted him with words: “Its Okay, dear.  Sometimes God does not answer our prayer.  But He still loves us.”  Daniel answered: “Mom, God did answered my prayer. I just asked Him to make it so I don’t cry when I lose.”

In the race of our life, do you always pray to win?  Maybe we should pray more for not being afraid to lose.”
