Who’s hand?

“For the gracious hand his God was on him.” (Ezra.7: 9)

Thanksgiving Day was near, so the first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment to do; which was to draw a picture of something or somebody for whom they were thankful.  All of the students began to work; one kid drew a turkey to represent the happy season, another child drew his parents, while others drew toys or traditional goodies.  Most of the pictures can be easily identified.  But only Douglas drew a different kind of picture.  He drew a hand, nothing else, just an empty hand.

Douglas was a shy boy.  He always had a sad face with a gleam of misery.  While others were running around in the playground, Douglas always stood on the side watching his classmates chasing each other.  The teacher understood his feelings, so she let him stand by her side.  One can only guess the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.  Sometimes the teacher would take his hand and walk him here and there.  Other times, she would hold his hand to teach him how to use tools or to hold pencil, or gave him some simple assignments.

All of the students were surrounding Douglas seat, because they would like to know what his drawing meant.  Some said it must a farmer’s hand, because farmers raise turkey.  Some said it must a policeman’s hand, because the police protected us.  Some guessed it must be a parent’s hand, because they love their children.  Or some even said it must be God’s hand, because He created everything.  Douglas did not say anything.  He stood there without a word, just shaking his head.  It seemed that nobody could read his mind.  Not long afterwards, did all of the children lose interest and went back to their own.  The teacher approached Douglas and said gently, “Would you mind telling me whose hand you drew?”  The boy lifted up his eyes, looked away, and murmured, “It’s yours, teacher.”

During this season of Thanksgiving, have we thought for a  moment of what matters or whom we could give thanks for?  During this economic downtime, many unfortunate things have happened, some have to cut down their budgets in order to make ends meet, do we still have something to be thankful for?  Beyond all dismay and difficulties, there is still God’s hand of grace leading and supporting us silently.  Even during the most troubling moments, His hand still holds onto ours tightly.  Because His love will never let us go.
