Listening

Blessed are your ears because they hear.” (Matt.13:16)

A Native American went to visit his friend, who lived in downtown New York City.  They were walking near Times Square in Manhattan.  It was during the noon lunch hour and the streets were filled with people.  The honking of horns, squealing of taxicab tires, wailing of sirens, and sounds of city were almost deafening.  Suddenly the Native American said: “I hear a cricket.”  His friend said: “Don’t be ridiculous. You couldn’t possibly hear a cricket in the midst of all of this noise!”  The Native American stopped and listened carefully for a moment, and then walked towards to a cement planter.  He looked into the bushes and sure enough, he located a small cricket sitting on the bottom of the branch.  His friend was utterly amazed.  “That’s incredible,” said the friend, “you must have super-human ears.”  “No,” said the Native American, “My ears are no different from yours.  It all depends on what is really important to you.  Let me show you how true this is.”  He reached into his pocket, pulled out a few coins, and discreetly dropped them on the sidewalk.  And then, everyone within twenty feet turned and looked to see if the money that tinkled on the pavement was his or hers.  “See what I mean?” asked the Native American.  “It all depends on what’s important to you.”

Everyone picks what he or she likes to hear or listen to.  There are many voices in this world, but most of them do not enter our ears.  We only listen to those voices that make us feel comfortable.  In the same way, God constantly speaks to us, but we don’t want to hear Him or avoid listening to Him intentionally.  On the other hand, we spend much effort to find out the news of our stock market investments, gossips of celebrities, etc.  Christians of this generation do not pay attention to training oneself in meditation and the skill of listening.  When Jesus came to the world, he proclaimed justice to the nations.  But He did not quarrel or cry out on the streets. (Matt, 12:19)  Only those who were willing to submit themselves to Him could hear His voice.  Today, the voice of the Holy Spirit is very small.  He is gently speaking inside of us.  Only those who with a quiet heart can heart it.

Are you too busy to hear God’s voice?  Can you spare some quiet moments everyday to listen to His voice?
