Rescue Life

“To the weak I become weak, to win the weak.  I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.” (1 Cor. 9:22)

A pastor spoke about one of his experiences.  One Sunday, a car had broken down in the alley behind the church building.  He did not know why the car’s owner had jacked up the car and crawled underneath to work on it.  Suddenly, they heard a loud noise and the voice of someone yelling for help.  Several people went outside to check what was going on.  The jack had slipped, and the car had come down on top the owner.  Someone shouted, “Dial 911!” and a couple of people took out their cell phones to make the call.  Several men gathered around the large old car and strained to lift it off the trapped man.  A nurse from the church left the congregation and went to the scene.  Finally, the strong men were able to lift the car to take the weight off of the driver, so that he could be pulled free.  The nurse checked him over.  He was a bit scratched up and shaken, but otherwise okay.

When this man was in danger, people put down what they were doing and rushed to help.  They did all they could to assist, inconveniencing themselves, and even risking their own lives.  They were ready to try whatever was necessary to save this man, because life is so important to all of us.  However, the Christians were not serious about saving souls.  It seemed that a person’s physical life was much more important to them than his spiritual life.  Actually, a person’s physical life is just part of his whole life.  Whether his soul is saved, is a matter of his eternal existence.  Our souls are so important that Jesus Christ had of leave His throne from Heaven and come to rescue those in great peril of losing life eternally.

One night, on April 15, 1912, the Titanic plunged 12,000 feet to the Atlantic floor, there were twenty lifeboats and rafts that were able to carry at least 1,200 people.  However, only 709 were saved.  Most of the passengers ended up struggling in the icy seas, while those in the boats waited a safe distance away.  They listened to the cries of the lost, but failed to stretch out their hand to save them.  When you have the eternal salvation, are you still staying on the sidelines and not willing to help others to be saved?
