He Saves

He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will continue to deliver us.” (2 Cor. 1:10)

In April 20, 1999, eleven o’clock in the morning, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold pulled up their car, that full of explosive materials, four assault weapons and hundreds of ammunition, into the Columbine High School parking lot; they had one goal in mind, it was to kill at least one hundred students and adults. Since the two 20-pound propane bombs did not explode as planned, they went to the cafeteria to begin shooting people.

Rachel Scott was the first victim, four shots and an instant death. Her father was a minister, but left the ministry because of divorce. He was a manager of a food company at the time. Rachel was a very kind and compassionate young lady with a heart devoted to Christ. She often witnessed to others about her faith. She knew Dylan since kindergarten and remained in the same classes with him. She wrote an essay shortly before her death stating: “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” When the gunman shot her leg and asked if she still believed in God, she answered: “You know I do.” Then he gave a fatal shot to her head.

Shortly after the tragedy Scott’s father, Darrell, started a non-profit organization called “Columbine Redemption” which eventually became a nationwide educational ministry called “Rachel’s Challenge”. Her message presented through presentations and publications help motivate and encourage young people to positive changes; and have reached over one million youth in 2009 alone. Rachel’s brother Craig was hiding under the table with other students in the library when the incident happened. He pretended to be dead and was able to escape. Now he’s a speaker of this campaign. Many young people’s hearts were touched by his testimony. One girl wrote: “The day you came to my school, I was planning on committing suicide, but decided not to pull the trigger, after listening to you.”

God can change a tragedy into a blessing, if we are willing to submit ourselves to His good will. What’s important is not what had happened in the past, but what is going to happen in the future. We all can become God’s instrument to fulfill His desire of loving all the people in this world.
