The Attitude

“For he is the kind of man who is always thinking about the cost.” (Prov.23: 7)

How do we face problems in our life? The most important factor is Attitude. Attitude determines how one chooses to deal with issues. It is more important than past experiences, education, character, circumstances, money, wisdom, and what people do or say. Our attitude determines whether we succeed or fail during our difficulties. The remarkable thing is, we have choices everyday regarding our attitude and what we will embrace for the day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

At a village, word spread quickly about a wise man that moved to a stone house atop the mountain near by. A young man from the village decided to make the difficult journey to visit him; in order to receive some words of wisdom. He made much effort to climb the mountain. When he arrived at the stone house, he knocked on the heavy wooden door. When the door opened, he saw an old servant that stood there to greet him. He said: “I live in the village down at the hill, I would like to see the wise man to receive some great teaching from him.” The servant smiled and led him inside. As they walked through the house, the young looked eagerly around the house, anticipating his encounter with the wise man. They passed one room after another. Before he knew it he had been led to the back door and escorted outside. He stopped and turned to the servant. “But I want to see the Wise Man.” “You already have,” said the old man. “Everyone you may meet in life, even if they appear insignificant can be a wise man. What matters is what kind of attitude do you choose to treat them.”

Our attitudes decide the results of our encounters in this world. There was a man taking a walk and stopped at a ballpark where a local little League baseball game was playing. He sat down behind the bench on the first-baseline. He asked one of the boys what the score was. “We’re behind 14 to nothing,” he answered with a smile. “Really,” the man said: “I have to say you don’t look very discouraged.” “Discouraged?” the boy asked with a puzzled look on his face. “Why should we be discouraged? We haven’t been up to bat yet.”
